Sadly, but also happily in so much as it is resolved, it was the case that the rear cassette had to be changed at the same time as the chain. I had to fork out some more cash, but now that is done and I am enjoying the improved ride I has promised myself - and having to spend around £60 once a year or so to change the chain and rear cassette is not so bad, I guess.

I don’t think It is that one can’t expect understanding and empathy for one’s feelings. I agree with you that it is incredibly important in important relationships to feel understood and to have one’s feelings validated.
But I would ask you these questions to further understand why this is important: How does one know when one has been fully understood? How does one know when one hasn’t? What difference to either person does this bring about?
How do you know when you have fully understood another and what if any difference will that make to how you are?
Finally, what happens if you have been understood but the person still doesn’t accept your point of view or has an alternative view of their own Does this still count as being understood? I’d like to discuss these questions with you.

i'm pleased we can really enjoy the memory of daisy and now imagine all the people with special needs who will be getting out and about on saturday mornings and enjoying a ride and the freedom of whizzing along in Brockwell Park who would never have been able to do that otherwise, or those just wanting to ride together. and so looking forward to many trips on our purple tandem, not least the training for the night ride and the training in relationships that riding a tandem involves.

"We rode in sorrow, with strong hounds three,
Bran, Sgeolan, and Lomair,
On a morning misty and mild and fair.
The mist-drops hung on the fragrant trees,
And in the blossoms hung the bees.
We rode in sadness above Lough Lean,
For our best were dead on Gavra's green."

And then, later in life, although W.B. Yeats may not have been the best it is so well known it barely needs mention;

"Cast a cold Eye
On Life, on Death.
Horseman, pass by."

(with apologies for the gender change to Pablo Neruda):

"A woman lives for as long as we carry her inside us,
For as long as we carry the harvest of her dreams,
For as long as we ourselves live,
Holding memories in common, a woman lives.

I’m looking forward to the rest of this book immensely. His style is a little odd at first but I soon realized the power of it. It’s as if he is painting in exquisite detail not just a visual picture for the reader but an extremely atmospheric one, capturing mood and perhaps the disconnect that I imagine our protagonist might be feeling given the nature of his arrival in New York.

The beginning was, as you said immediately capturing of interest, and the dawning of what had happened was shocking and intriguing all at the same time.
It is a stonking start to what I hope will continue to be a consuming read.

it is sad. he was a sweet if slightly obsessed man but with obsession as you say comes passion sometimes too. he had obviously had life changing experiences and it must have been something wonderful for him to have his music so often performed. he loved his wife and was completely batty over his dogs. he struck me as kind too. funny that we sang his sanctus together but weren't as it were then!
